Windose Defender Crappery - NOT amateur radio

Recently Windose 10 did a big update. When I tried to log into Windows Defender all appears to have changed. It is no longer clear if Windows Defender is trying to protect things or not. In the past this was very clear and it told me that my other anti-virus program was providing protection.

This was sneaked in without my knowledge. I am getting more "big brother" conscious than ever.

Microsoft, just what are you playing at? If you intend to make things worse, just tell us!! We are grown up!  When it works, Windows 10 is good, but if it is so darn good why is it forever changing?

Bloody MicroCRAP - NOT amateur radio

Microsoft has just popped up with a window I cannot close asking me to choose BING as my default search engine. Microsoft, I am perfectly happy with my current search engine thank you and I strongly object to this pernicious crap. Go away you bunch of scumbags!

Windoze - zzz - 10

Let me start by saying I have used Windows 10 for a long time with no issues.

Today, my shack PC said it needed more disk space to do an essential update, so I added an external drive when doing this. My shack PC has a 32GB SSD. It is really only used for syncing to internet time and to run OPERA and WSJT-X software.

Now, if Windows 10 is so brilliant why does it take 90 minutes to install updates?!

Thankfully, as far as I can tell, everything I use still works.

Microshaft - NOT amateur radio

A few moments ago my wife tried to log onto her on-line email account. Up came a pop-up window allegedly from Microsoft encouraging her to change to the Bing search engine and change the default browser to a Microsoft one. There was no way to close the pop-up window and no cross in the corner! Instead we closed the PC and started all over again.

We choose the browser we use and we choose the search engine we use!! If these are not Microsoft, so be it. We deeply resent this sort of intrusion. Sorry, but I was not at all impressed and will never now use Bing. I use Windows 10 but I hate this sort of behaviour. STOP IT NOW!!!

SPAM? - NOT amateur radio

Today I got an email purporting to be from Microsoft saying that they think my email address was compromised.

Now, this may be a SPAM, but if you have received any suspicious emails supposedly from me, please accept my apologies. As always DO NOT open links you do not trust or know to be safe. If you have received anything odd, purporting to have been sent by me, please let me know.

Hopefully the issue has been dealt with and you should not get further trouble. If this is a SPAM please let me know too as my mail account did not see this as SPAM.

Steve G1KQH has again passed on some data, this time about free eBooks from Microsoft.

The collection covers Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Office 2013, Office 365, Office 2010, SharePoint 2013, Dynamics CRM, PowerShell, Exchange Server, Lync 2013, System Center, Azure, Cloud, SQL Server, and much more.

I am just acting as postman here as I have not read any of them.

Again, my thanks to Steve for finding these.  See Eric Lygman's blog which has more details.

Microsoft Essentials virus protection

On our regular local Monday night 2m net on 144.575MHz (in the all mode section) - anyone is welcome to join us in the East Cambridgeshire area - the subject of PC virus protection came up tonight. Some months back someone told me about Microsoft Essentials which is a free virus protection package. I still use McAfee here and have another year to run on it, but wonder what people think about the free Microsoft package? Does it work well?
